I am convinced that apples are the fruit of the fall season. Every year, I can’t wait to sink my teeth into every kind of apple recipe possible! • puff pastry sheet – Just one sheet.
  • granny smith apples – About 2 large apples, thinly sliced.
  • butter – You’ll want salted butter for this recipe. Make sure it’s softened, but not completely melted.
  • honey – Honey adds a natural sweetness to help balance the naturally tart flavor of the apples. Brown sugar can be used as a substitute or you can use a combination of honey and brown sugar.
  • ground cinnamon – A sprinkle of cloves or nutmeg are great substitutions or additions.
  • apple pie spice – The blend of earthy spices really shines through in this delicious apple tart recipe.
  • pecans – Finely crushed. Walnuts or other nuts can be substituted.
  • caramel sauce – I like Hershey’s for store-bought. However, you can really step things up by making homemade Caramel Sauce

How long will this apple tart recipe stay fresh?

You can keep any leftover puff pastries wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or an airtight container on the counter for 2 to 3 days. They will last for up to about 7 days stored in the refrigerator. You can even freeze these tarts, simply thaw before serving.

Can I make a double batch since puff pastry usually comes in two sheets instead of one?

You sure can! Simply double up on the amounts for ingredients and make two trays of apple tarts instead of one. Doubling the recipe will yield 12 tarts.

Is Phyllo dough the same thing as puff pastry?

No it is not. I don’t recommend substituting puff pastry for Phyllo dough. Phyllo dough is much thinner and won’t give your tart the right texture and consistency. Puff pastry is much denser and sturdier which is what we need for a delicious tasting tart.

    Variations and Tips

    • For an even sweeter, less tart tart use red delicious apples (or a blend of both red and green) apples.
    • If pecans aren’t your preference, switch them out for chopped walnuts or almond slices.
    • Serve with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream and even more caramel sauce

If you want to slice your apples ahead of time but are afraid of browning, simply soak them in 1 to 2 tablespoons of lemon juice combined with about 2 cups of water for 5 minutes. After soaking the apple slices, drain and rinse the apples. Store the apple slices in a container and this should keep them from browning for up to 3 days.
